  • What is a peptide?

Peptides are biologically occurring short chains of amino acid monomers linked by peptide bonds (-NH-CO-). The shortest peptide is a dipeptide consisting of two amino acids joined by a single peptide bond, and oligopeptides consist of seven to eight amino acids. A polypeptide is a long, continuous, and unbranched peptide chain, consisting of amino acids above the number.
  • Peptide as a drug

Conditions of peptide drugs: molecular weight below 10 kDa, consisting of less than 50 amino acids

Advantages compared to

Proteins Low molecular weight drugs

· Lower production cost

· Excellent infiltration ability

· Less toxic

· Low drug-drug interactions

· high selectivity and specificity

  • Examples of peptide drugs on market

For the last 20 years, peptide-based drugs have been developed and marketed worldwide for a variety of indications by multi-national pharmaceutical companies. In 2015, 14 peptide drugs are on clinical trials phase III, and 74 on phase II, 40 on phase I. Preclinical development of 500~600 peptide drugs are also ongoing.

The following graph shows current status of global peptide therapeutic market revenue by applications in 2013.
  • Examples of drugs having pleiotropic effect

Aspirin was originally developed as a medicine to treat pain and fever 120 years ago. However, it was also demonstrated that aspirins were effective in preventing heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and decreasing the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer, stomach cancer and cervical cancer. Recently, it has been clinically used to prevent or treat such indications. Statins, as a lipid-lowering drug, have been found to have effects on certain types of solid tumors. Additionally, metformin is the first-line medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, the efficacy on Alzheimer’s disease has been recently reported as well as the efficacy on prostate and pancreatic cancers. In fact, such discovery of additional and multi-faceted effects has been out of serendipity in many cases. Viagra was also originally discovered as a treatment for various cardiovascular disorders. Since its market launch in 1998, Viagra has been a common treatment for erectile dysfunction. In addition, Minoxidil, known as an antihypertensive vasodilator medication, is widely used for the treatment of hair loss. Especially, 35% of anti-cancer drugs were discovered by serendipity.

We have been carefully investigating he multi-faceted pleiotropic effects of GV1001™, which offers great opportunities of novel drug discovery and development.
